Using a fun spelling challenge can be an effective way to boost engagement on your website. This post shows you how to make your own spelling test online!
A spelling quiz or spelling game can help you increase user engagement and serve as a lead magnet. All it takes are a few spelling words and a couple of minutes to set up the spelling practice quiz on your website.
In addition, if you offer online courses, you can use this test to assess your students' spelling skills and progress. While you'll find plenty of spelling tests online, you might prefer to make your own.
Fortunately, the Formidable Forms plugin makes creating a spelling practice test easy. You can create engaging tests using our spelling quiz template in just a few minutes.
This post will show you how to make your spelling bee tests in three simple steps. Let's get started!
Step 1: Set your questions
Before we get started, ensure you have the latest version of Formidable Forms Pro installed on your website. You'll also need the Quiz Maker plugin. Once you have both tools on your site, you can start working on your first spelling quiz.
To create a spelling test, navigate to Formidable → Forms in your WordPress dashboard, then click on Add New:
Next, you can create your test from scratch or use our Spelling Quiz template. We recommend the second method, as it simplifies the process.
Once you select the Spelling Quiz template, you'll be taken to the form builder:
As you can see, the template has some example questions with a list of possible answers for each. Start by clicking on it if you want to change or edit a question. This will bring up the Field Options on the left-hand side of the page:
You can then enter your question into the Field Label box. You can also make it a required field. This means users can't submit the test if they don't answer this question.
To add more questions, navigate to Add Fields tab and select Radio Buttons. Then, under Field Options, click on a field to crate and set your spelling test question:
Alternatively, you could add a Dropdown field and add several options.
When you use this field, the questions will appear in a dropdown menu. To make your quiz more dynamic, we recommend using a mix of radio buttons and dropdowns.
If you want to present one question per page, you just need to turn it into a form conversation.
Step 2: Add your answers for each question
If you're making multiple-choice questions, you must show a list of possible answers. To do this, select your question. Then, in the Field Options settings, scroll down to Radio Buttons Options:
Here, you can add text for each radio button. To include more answers, click on Add Option.
You can also change the display format of your answers. For example, you might present them as images or buttons:
If you're using a Dropdown field, you can enter your questions in the Dropdown Options section:
Note that you also get some advanced settings for each field. We recommend taking some time to explore these options and customize your quiz. You might also think about using conditional logic. When you're happy with your spelling lists and any needed changes, click on Update.
Step 3: Configure the settings of your spelling test
Once you've finished making your questions and answers, you can configure some settings for your spelling test. To start, navigate to the SETTINGS tab and select Actions & Notifications. Then, click on Quiz:
This will create a new section with some options. For example, you can choose what will happen when a user submits the spelling test:
You also have the option to show the questions in a random order each time the form is loaded. Additionally, you can randomize the possibilities. When you're happy with your settings, click on Update.
Finally, you'll need to let Formidable Forms know which answers are correct. This will allow it to automatically score your users' tests.
Click on the Customize Quiz Scoring button in the Quiz form action. A popup with all of your questions will open.
If you click on a question, you can select the correct answer:
You can also set a score for each question. By default, Formidable Forms awards one point for every correct answer. If you want answers weighted differently, you can assign a different value for every question. When you're ready, click on Update.
Once you finish your quiz, you may want to give it a test run. Doing so can confirm that it's working correctly and that you selected the correct options in the answer key.
Formidable Forms handles all your quiz needs
Formidable's spelling abilities could win the Scripps National Spelling Bee, we know that much.
But it doesn't just stop at spelling tests. It can handle other types of quizzes as well.
If you need to create an online exam and then have the score calculated, Formidable can do that. Want to make a simple quiz form, Formidable can handle that, too. There's a reason it's considered one of the best quiz plugins for WordPress.
