frm_show_clickable_field_errors

Heads up! This article contains PHP code and is intended for developers. We offer this code as a courtesy, but don't provide support for code customizations or third-party development.

Use the frm_show_clickable_field_errors filter to turn off the clickable list of field errors on one form or on every form. When a submission fails validation, Formidable shows the incorrect field message at the top of the form. A list of the fields that failed follows it, and each item links to its field.

Return false to show the incorrect field message on its own, without the list.

Requirements

  • Formidable Forms 7.0 or later.
  • The filter is in Formidable Forms Lite, so it works with or without Formidable Forms Pro.

Formidable Forms makes advanced site building simple. Launch forms, directories, dashboards, and custom WordPress apps faster than ever before.

Usage

add_filter( 'frm_show_clickable_field_errors', 'my_show_clickable_field_errors', 10, 2 );

Parameters

  • $show_summary (bool): Whether to list each field that failed validation. Default true.
  • $args (array): Information about the form being shown.
    • 'form' (object): The form. It can be missing, so check it with isset() before you use it.
    • 'errors' (array): The validation errors, keyed by field (for example, 'field25'). This array is empty when Formidable only checks whether the list is on for a form, such as while the form loads.

How the error list affects focus

The filter also changes where the browser's focus goes after a failed submission. While the list is on, the error message at the top of the form receives focus. The individual field errors don't get role="alert", which stops screen readers from announcing the same errors twice.

To keep the list but stop it from taking focus, use the frm_focus_error_summary filter, also added in 7.0.

When you return false, Formidable uses the behavior from before 7.0. Focus moves to the first field with an error, and each field error gets role="alert".

Examples

Learn where to put the code when adding a custom PHP function to your site.

Turn off the error list on every form

This example removes the clickable list of field errors from all forms. The incorrect field message still shows at the top of the form.

add_filter( 'frm_show_clickable_field_errors', '__return_false' );

Turn off the error list on one form

This example removes the list from a single form. Replace 123 with the ID of your form. It checks the form, not the errors, because Formidable also runs this filter with an empty errors array to set the form's focus behavior.

add_filter( 'frm_show_clickable_field_errors', 'my_hide_error_list_for_form', 10, 2 );
function my_hide_error_list_for_form( $show_summary, $args ) {
	$form_id = 123; // Change 123 to the ID of your form.

	if ( isset( $args['form'] ) && is_object( $args['form'] ) && (int) $args['form']->id === $form_id ) {
		return false;
	}

	return $show_summary;
}

Limitations

  • The filter only controls the list of field errors. It doesn't change the incorrect field message above it.
  • Errors that don't belong to a field, such as a spam error, never appear in the list.
  • A field error on another page of a multi-page form, or on a Hidden or User ID field, is listed as plain text instead of a link.
