In today’s article, we'll show you how to connect your WordPress forms to ActiveCampaign so you can create awesome, custom forms and still benefit from all the power of AC.
Ready to get started? Let's go!
What is ActiveCampaign?
ActiveCampaign is an email marketing and marketing automation tool that comes with CRM and advanced sales tracking features.
Since online forms are the starting point for many lead tracking and email automation processes, ActiveCampaign also has a form builder. The form builder lets you create standard inline forms, modals, floating bars, and boxes. You can even create popup forms in ActiveCampaign.
But there's a big drawback.
Although the builder lets you make several types of forms, it doesn't give you much control over the forms you've created. And that's no good if you want to customize your forms to improve the customer experience (and hopefully get more form submissions!).
Why use a WordPress form builder with ActiveCampaign?
Because a good WordPress form builder lets you do way more with your web forms!
Sure, it's simple enough to integrate an ActiveCampaign form in WordPress by copying and pasting some shortcodes.
But with the right WordPress form maker, you can create ActiveCampaign forms that collect payments, provide product recommendations, accept file uploads, and perfectly match the look and feel of your website.
Which ActiveCampaign form builder to choose?
The best form plugin for ActiveCampaign is Formidable Forms.
We may be slightly biased since it's our plugin. But with 400,000+ happy users, you don't have to take our word for it!
We also use Formidable Forms + ActiveCampaign to run our company's entire marketing automation system, so you can be sure our WordPress ActiveCampaign plugin is as good as it gets.
With our ActiveCampaign add-on, you can link up your ActiveCampaign account to create high-converting web forms. For example, You can create contact and newsletter signup forms with double opt-ins. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
ActiveCampaign forms don’t offer the same options as a full-scale form builder, and a form builder will never have the marketing automation power of a tool like ActiveCampaign.
So why not find two that work seamlessly together and get the best of both worlds?
With Formidable, you can do what the default forms in ActiveCampaign can’t: create quizzes to collect email addresses, add conditional logic to forms, make multi-step and conversational forms, and the list goes on and on.
We don’t need to drag this out, though. You are probably here because you realize that the forms in ActiveCampaign aren’t the perfect solution.
Official ActiveCampaign WordPress plugin limitations
The official WordPress plugin for ActiveCampaign isn't bad at all. It makes embedding an ActiveCampaign form in a WordPress page or post even easier and lets you add advanced site tracking.
But it's really simple to add an ActiveCampaign form to WordPress without the plugin. Not everyone wants or needs tracking on their website, and you have to be careful because it can seriously slow down your site.
Besides, you want to create more powerful form solutions for your site, right? The ActiveCampaign plugin won’t be a part of that anyway.
So, let's show you how easy it is to connect Formidable Forms and ActiveCampaign.
How to create and connect a WordPress form to ActiveCampaign
Step 1: Install Formidable Forms
The first step is installing our WordPress forms plugin, Formidable Forms.
To do this, download Formidable Forms from your Account page and upload it to WordPress to install it. Then, activate the plugin, and you'll be ready to use it.
Step 2: Install ActiveCampaign on your WordPress website
In your WordPress dashboard, find Formidable → Add-ons. Here, you should find an option for the ActiveCampaign WordPress plugin.
Click to install it, and you’ll be ready to get started.
Step 3: Set up the ActiveCampaign integration
Once ActiveCampaign is installed, it’s time to set up the link between it and Formidable Forms.
First of all, go to Formidable’s Global Settings and then click on ActiveCampaign.
Go to ActiveCampaign’s website in another tab and log in to your account. In Settings and under Developer, you should see an API URL and an API key.
Copy the ActiveCampaign API URL and key and paste them into the related boxes on Formidable Forms.
Once these two apps are linked, you're ready to start creating ActiveCampaign forms in WordPress.
Step 4: Create an ActiveCampaign form
If you already have a form you wish to use with ActiveCampaigns, open it with the form builder. Alternatively, create a new form for this purpose.
Once you’ve created a form, go to Settings at the top of the form builder.
Click on Actions and Notifications on your left. You should see an icon for ActiveCampaign under Email Marketing. Click on that. This will add an ActiveCampaign form action to your form.
For easy reference, give your new ActiveCampaign action a Label.
Step 5: Select your ActiveCampaign list
The next thing to do is select the ActiveCampaign list you wish to use.
Map your form fields to ActiveCampaign fields. This is important for all of the integration's required fields.
All that’s left is to submit the form. This will add a new contact to ActiveCampaign.
